For a Poignant PowerPoint Presentation

  • Know your target audience/s.
  • Know the room.
  • Know the equipment.
  • Be a guide to the audience. Explain the context. Give a blueprint.
  • Follow the blueprint. Print out the slides. Practice with each other.
  • Do not use more than three bullet points per slide.
  • Don't overwhelm with thick text!
  • Be color cautious.
    • use neutral colors
    • don't use too many colors
    • be consistent (thematize)
  • Light text. Dark background. Easier to remember.
  • Keep slide transitions simple and quick.
  • Avoid long animations and repetitive transitions.
  • Avoid sound effects.
  • Don't use PowerPoint as a crutch. No reading.
  • Don't insult the audience-they can read. (So don't read to them.)
    • allude to what is on the slide, but don't echo
    • provide additional context.
  • Graphics are better than words.
  • Consider margins.
  • Consistent, but different styles for each level in the information hierarchy.
  • Don't over do it with the clip art.
  • Be careful about pointer.
  • Appropriate font style and size. Must be readable to audience in the back of the room.
  • Keep group member transitions crisp. (No "like she said" links.)
  • Look at the audience, not the slides.
