General Tips for Off-Campus Interviews and Site
Visits
During the course of the
informational interview assignment and the final project in WRIT 340,
you may need to travel off campus for meetings, site visits, etc.
Please keep in mind the following tips in order to make your off-campus
visits as safe and effective as possible:
- Double check your directions to off-campus
destinations and make sure you have a phone number for a contact
at the location in the event that you need further assistance. Bring
a cellular phone if possible.
- Confirm off-campus appointments 24-48
hours in advance so that your contact is expecting your visit.
- If possible, arrange to visit off-campus
sites in groups.
- Never attempt to make a site visit after
hours or late in the evening. Never visit a site unless it is pre-arranged.
- Make sure that someone, such as a friend
or family member, is aware of your plans ahead of time.
- Do research on the organization/person
before your visit. Prepare questions in advance in order to make
the best use of your contact's limited time.
- Ask for permission in advance if you can
take photos or video or if you intend to tape a conversation.
- Let the organization know in advance
if you plan on taking measurements.
- Always be polite and remember that your
contact is making time in their schedule for you. Be sure to address
contacts professionally (Mr., Ms, Dr., etc.).
- Remember at all times that you are representing
USC and the Viterbi School of Engineering.
