TEACHING AND ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE:

Instructor – University of Southern California, Engineering Writing Program. Teach upper level engineering students the pleasures and possibilities of writing and public speaking in their future occupations. WRIT 340 is a mandatory writing class for all USC students. 8/2003-present.

Instructor - UCLA Extension program, American Language Center. Taught several ESL and film history classes to students from many countries. Summer sessions. 1996 - 2003.

Instructor – Cal State University, Long Beach Extension. Taught a 12-week reading and writing course in the American Language Institute. Part-time. 6/2003 - 8/2003.

Instructor -Santa Monica Community College. Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL): Advanced ESL Reading and Writing, TOEFL, Business English, Idioms, and VESL. Also worked on the curriculum committee, helped write a 231 federal grant proposal, and create an ESL placement test for non-credit adult students. Part-time. 2/2000 - 6/2003.

Instructor - Santa Monica-Malibu Adult Education Center. Created and taught district’s first Citizenship adult education class for immigrants seeking naturalization as U.S. citizens. Taught Adv. ESL classes. CASAS test coordinator, gave in-service workshops, and supervised administration of mandatory standardized exams 1999-2000 school year. Grant writer. Part-time. 9/93 - 12/2000.


Director - Adult Education Programs- Community Enhancement Services. Designed, wrote, and implemented comprehensive curriculum for adult education classes for recent immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Classes included English as a Second Language and Citizenship classes. Hired and directed a teaching staff of seven bilingual adult education instructors. Wrote numerous successful grants (Emma Lazarus, 231 funds.) 1/97-10/99. Los Angeles.

Video/Book Reviewer - Social Studies School Service. Evaluated books, charts, and videos for classroom use by English, Journalism, and History high school and college teachers. Also reviewed materials for elementary and middle school materials. Wrote concise reviews with detailed summaries that included notes on editorial biases, teaching tips, and special features. 1/95 - 12/96. Culver City.

High School Teacher - LAUSD. Locke H.S. Taught Intermediate ESL classes of “at-risk” immigrant students. Also taught 10th grade literature. Chose to leave at semester end due to campus’ violent atmosphere. 1/94 - 6/94. South Central Los Angeles.

Adult ESL Teacher - LAUSD. Jefferson Adult School. Taught ESL classes. 10/93 - 6/94.

Department Head - Don Martin College of English. Supervised 18 ESL teachers, wrote comprehensive curriculum focused on life skills, and conducted classroom observations for 15 months until 4/93. Full-time. 1/92 - 9/93. Los Angeles.

Guest lecturer - New School for Social Research. Gave two guest lectures to Media and Politics graduate students on political ads in New York State elections. 10/88. NYC.

Chair, CES Advisory Board on Adult Education. 2001- present.

New Teacher of the Year, Bed-Stuy Outreach H.S. Chosen by faculty and students. 1986.

2nd Place Investigative Reporting Series, "Justice in Brooklyn." New York State Press Association. Wrote two of the six reports as part of a five person reporting team. The series tracked criminal cases. My articles focused on the 76th Police Precinct and the Brooklyn House of Detention. 1985.

1986 American Bar Association award for public service given to the Phoenix Newspaper for the same series on the collapsing criminal justice system.

Senior Award for Leadership, Wabash College. Chosen by faculty and Student Senate for organizing faculty symposiums on the dangers of nuclear weapons. 1984.

Lilly Scholarship for Renaissance Students. Scholarship included full tuition, room and board, books, and a $1,000 travel stipend to Wabash College for four years. 1980-1984.

Indiana Chess Championship, 6th place. 1979.

 

PUBLIC AFFAIRS/JOURNALISM

Contributing Reporter- Los Angeles LA Jewish Journal. Wrote in-depth articles on political, cultural, and educational issues of special interest. 10/99-2/1/2001.

District Representative- Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA). Monitored local press, spoke at public meetings, and handled phone calls. 7/94-1/95. Beverly Hills.

Political Reporter - Los Angeles Village View. Covered the 1993 Los Angeles mayoral race, profiled four mayoral candidates, and wrote weekly column. Part-time. 1993-1994.

Book Reviewer - Los Angeles Village View. Wrote profiles on prominent authors. Reviewed books on media, history, and politics. Part-time. 1992-1994.

Writer/script analyst - Films That Make a Difference. Wrote and optioned Zero Tolerance. Critiqued scripts and wrote coverage for independent producer. 1/90-12/91.

CASAS testing national taskforce member - CASAS Summer Institute -6/99 and 7/00. Reviewed testing materials and procedures for adults taking ESL, GED, ABE, and vocational training programs. Provided detailed feedback on common problems.
