Mr. Roth was born in Vienna, Austria. He was raised in New York but moved to Israel in 1948. He later hitchhiked through Europe, working his way back as a merchant seaman.

He worked part-time as a seaman and went to Brooklyn College. His undergraduate work was in history, and his graduate work in political science. As a merchant seaman he salied to Arab countries, through the Suez Canal, East Africa, and spent a month in India. India impressed very much. "There was a primitive loading system for the ships there and it took two weeks to wait for a berth and one month for the ship to be loaded." This wait gave him time to see the area.

Mr. Roth discussed his unusual head covering. "Sailing through the Suez Canal to the Gulf of Aquaba I could see Israel but I wasn't allowed to enter to see my brother whom I hadn't seen for several years. A company agent delivered a letter from my brother and I traded this man for his headdress in exchange for some American items like cigarettes. This picture was taken in 1957."

Mr. Roth began teaching at Jeff in January. He previously taught in Indianapolis, Indiana for four years at Chrispus Attucks High School and in Planeview High School. Teaching social studies is easy for Mr. Roth because it covers many areas that he was in. He gives first hand impressions of the different lands to his students. His travels have given him understanding of the different ways of life, cultures, problems and nonwestern attitudes of developing countries.
